UNITE Walk To Remember

The Annual UNITE Walk to Remember is an event that my family and I hold at high importance.  This year, May 18, 2013 marked the 3rd Annual Walk that many attended.  Although we never forget every second of everyday our babies that have left us, it is nice to attend a function to honor them and to remember that they were here.  It brings unity to all who come, from the parents that have lost their child, to siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and UNITE boardmembers, as well.  The walk itself brings on a lot of emotions,  both sad because we are remembering our babies, and happy because we have all come  together to honor our babies.  It is also nice to see fellow group members outside of the support group environment and out in the world of nature at a local Park.    The bubbles, that are blown by all, bring  a powerful releasing feeling, as if we are sending our love directly to our babies.  The walk is also liberating  to actually do something for our children since we are unable to be with them now.  The raffles add an entertaining element to the picnic which always lightens moods and helps people smile.  This event will be something that my family and I will look forward to every year to remember my daugher Haley, as well as all of the other babies we have tragically lost.

 UNITE’S Third Annual
Walk To Remember/Picnic
May 18, 2013

Our Third Annual Walk to Remember and Picnic was once again held on Saturday, May 18, 2013 and was well attended.  The weather was very nice, and the rain held off until our festivities ended.  We had over 80 in attendance.

It was so nice to meet the bereaved parents and families that I have spoken to throughout the years.  My only regret was that I was unable to speak to everyone personally, as I was working on collecting sponsorship forms, etc.  Next year, please try and find me so that I may take the time to meet with you.  It was so wonderful to have this joyous time to spend with members, friends, families, and colleagues.

Carol Kealey, Facilitator of the UNITE Riddle Group made a beautiful poster and purchased balloons, which were attached to the poster.

Karen Powers, our newly elected Vice-President of Fundraising, made a wonderfully delicious cake, which was decorated with UNITE’s Logo.

Linda Nuccitelli, Newsletter Editor, introduced Don Porreca, our President.  Don stated, “I want to thank everyone for coming out today.  When we had our first Walk and Picnic two years ago, we had no idea how many people would attend.  But it’s grown and grown.  And that’s a tribute to all the love and support that our grieving parents receive from their families and friends.  I believe I speak for all the UNITE Facilitators and volunteers, when I say that it’s been, and is, our privilege to accompany all who have had losses on their grief journey.”

Linda Nuccitelli, once again, read the poem, The Walk, and distributed small, heart shaped bubbles to everyone before we proceeded to walk.  Linda also donated the cost of the Pavilion.

Heather McDermott, sister of Shannon Sciotto, organized a very large group of sponsors for Team Lilliana Francesca Sciotto, in memory of her niece.  Shannon and Frank Sciotto are from the Lankenau Group.

Barbara Bond-Moury, our Board Chair person was unable to attend; however, Barbara walked in memory of all of our babies, while in California.  Please see the picture of the Terranea Trail in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.

Many of Karen and Glen Powers family and friends attended and walked in memory of Haley Joyce Powers.  Karen’s brother also took many pictures.

Many thanks go to our Fundraising Committee:  Barbara Bond-Moury, Carol Kealey, Linda Nuccitelli, Don Porreca, and Karen Powers.  We had many wonderful raffle baskets, which was unexpected that I was overwhelmed trying to find boxes/containers to add the tickets to be drawn.

Please do not hesitate to contact our fundraising committee by emailing fundraising@unitegriefsupport.org or calling the UNITE tape:  1-888-488-6483 if you would like to attend next year or would be interested in volunteering to be on our fundraising committee.  We are also in need of more people who have ideas and may be able to give of their time by volunteering for this fundraiser or other future UNITE fundraisers.

Many of those in attendance were impressed with the work that we do at UNITE, and have said that they would like to continue to support our mission.  Your generous contributions will allow our organization to continue supporting current and future bereaved families.  Thank you!

Sincerely, Joanne Porreca
